Meer informatie over Chateau du Tertre 2020
Het kasteel dateert uit de 18e eeuw, de oorsprong van het landgoed is veel ouder en gaat terug tot 1143. Het behoorde toe aan de adellijke familie D’Arsac. Du Tertre wisselde in de eeuwen die volgden diverse malen van eigenaar. Zo kwam het in handen van de rijke familie Ségur. Deze familie bezaten vele kastelen in de Médoc waaronder Phelan-Ségur en Calon-Ségur.
In de vroege 20e eeuw trad het verval op. Dit kwam door onder meer de, de oorlog en de effecten van de desastreuze druifluis die vele wijngaarden vernietigden. In 1961 kocht de familie Gasqueton het kasteel en investeerde fors. Helaas resulteerde dat niet in een topwijn. In 1997 kocht Eric Albada Jelgersma het landgoed. Hierbij stelde hij Alexander van Beek als zijn manager. Daarna nam de kwaliteit een vlucht.
Nu is Du Tertre een wijn van topniveau en 5e Grand Cru Classé meer dan waardig. Het Château ligt op een indrukwekkende heuvel (in het Frans ‘Tertre’ genaamd) die totaal door wijnstokken wordt omringd. Sinds maart 2021 is het domein overgenomen door de familie Helfrich. Ze zullen de lange historie van het château met de door de jaren heen verworven klasse zal voortzetten.

“The 2020 Château du Tertre has a slightly herbaceous nose, a trait that I have noticed on recent vintages; I find it a little jarring. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, but again, I perceive some herbaceousness in this vintage, plus some attenuation toward the gritty finish. I’m not quite sure where this will go once in bottle.”

“A more sculpted feel to 2020 here than at many estates in Margaux, with touches of tobacco leaf and white pepper accompanying the raspberry and wild strawberry fruits right from the first moments. There is a vivacity to the tannins, which remain muscular and a little sombre on the finish, once they have built up through the palate. Good stuff. Château du Tertre announced new owners as of January 2021, with the Helfrich family of Grands Chais de France taking over from previous owners Albada Jelgersma family on a leasing and management basis. 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend. A yield of 25hl/ha. 40% new oak.”

“Displaying a deep purple-black color, the 2020 du Tertre springs from the glass with pronounced blackcurrant pastilles, black cherry preserves and blueberry pie scents, with an undercurrent of dried Mediterranean herbs, pencil shavings, tar and black olives. The medium-bodied palate offers compelling freshness with a soft, approachable texture and plenty of juicy black fruits, finishing with invigorating herbal notes.”

“The final vintage before this estate was sold to the new owners, the Helfrich family, is a blend of 27% Merlot, 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 13% Cabernet Franc. This yields was a rather shy 25 hl/ha, the smallest crop since the frosted harvest of 1991. The nose here feels delicately fragranced, with dried redcurrant and cranberry fruit to the fore, with threads of toasted almond but also some rather more prominent notes of leafy mint, celery seed and fragrant rose petal.
An attractive sense of precision on the start of the palate, with a moderate body but nice delineation, this has a rich wrapping of lightly grained and slightly drying tannins in the middle, which feel quite dominant over the fruit here. This takes on a dried cranberry character, a little crystalline, with some delicate floral and herby notes. Lots of long grip in the rather sappy finish. This could develop well. The alcohol is a modest 13.4%.”
